This policy shall be read with Eurotunnel’s Conditions of Carriage. This policy regulates the Carriage of Dangerous Goods (part 1), Hazardous Goods (part 2) and Hazardous Articles (part 3).
DANGEROUS GOODS
"Dangerous Goods" means any product, substance, material, article or item, capable of posing a significant risk to health, safety, property or the environment and which is classified under the ADR Regulations or any other Regulation in force by either Eurotunnel or Competent Authorities and/or specific provisions included in international treaties, duly ratified by the UK and/or France.
1.1 The Carriage of Dangerous Goods is regulated by and permitted only in accordance with the ADR/RID Regulations, this policy on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and any other applicable Regulations.
1.2 Dangerous Goods are only permitted on freight Shuttles.
1.3 The Carriage of Dangerous Goods regulated by ADR/RID Regulations (including those that meet the limited load exemptions) must be declared by the Customer to Eurotunnel prior to Carriage.
1.4 The Customer must, for all Dangerous Goods, specify the UN number, ADR/RID references (class, packing group and classification code if required), the official ADR/RID name of the substance, the quantity (as a volume, gross mass or net mass as appropriate) and details of the packaging.
1.5 Dangerous Goods being carried under the ADR/RID limited quantity, excepted quantity or any other special provisions, which do not need documentation, do not need to be declared to Eurotunnel. If however these Dangerous Goods are declared, a full ADR/RID declaration must be provided.
1.6 The Customer must ensure that Dangerous Goods presented for Carriage conform with all Regulations in force.
HAZARDOUS GOODS
“Hazardous Goods” means any goods for personal use described as hazardous by ADR, and/or which by their nature or the method by which they are transported are, in Eurotunnel’s sole opinion, liable to present a threat or hazard to the security and/or safety of Shuttle operations.
2.1 The Carriage of Hazardous Goods is subject to the prohibitions and restrictions set out in this policy and Eurotunnel’s Conditions of Carriage.
2.2 Hazardous Goods being carried for commercial purposes or classified as Commercial Goods are considered as Dangerous Goods and can only be carried on freight Shuttles.
2.3 The Carriage of Hazardous Goods intended for personal or domestic use including for leisure or sporting activities is permitted on passenger Shuttles.
2.4 Carriage of the following Hazardous Goods is PROHIBITED:
2.4.1 Acetylene (Oxy-acetylene) and toxic gases;
2.4.2 Vehicles powered by or which run on Hazardous Goods including Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) (Butane or Propane), Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) or any other flammable gas.
2.5 The Carriage of certain other Hazardous Goods is RESTRICTED:
2.5.1 The Carriage of gas containers must be declared to Eurotunnel by the Customer. All gas containers carried on passenger Shuttles will be checked by Eurotunnel;
2.5.2 Cylinders and tanks, and appliances powered by gas must be switched off or disabled during Carriage;
2.5.3 Leaking or inadequately secured cylinders, tanks or appliances will not be accepted for Carriage;
2.5.4 Empty or part empty cylinders will be considered to be full unless they have been purged (cleaned). There is no restriction on the number of empty and cleaned cylindersthat may be carried. To be accepted for Carriage the Customer must produce a cleaning certificate;
2.5.5 Flammable gas containers, cylinders and appliances containing LPG, LNG, CNG or BP Gas Light, or any other flammable gas must be declared by the Customer;
2.5.6 The maximum permitted volume and quantity of flammable gas cylinders and tanks per Vehicle is:
- For portable containers (cylinders/bottles, etc): Maximum of 47kg per cylinder and no more than 50kg per Vehicle if more than 1 container;
- For fixed containers (tanks): Maximum of 47kg per container and no more than 50kg per Vehicle if more than 1 container;
- Fixed containers must be no more than 80% full. The capacity of the container will be checked by Eurotunnel staff.
2.5.7 Gases for medical use: For example oxygen, nitrogen, helium and argon: are permitted for Carriage. There is no specific limit on the volume of gases for medical use or number of cylinders that can be carried.
2.5.8 Nitrous Oxide:There is no specific limit on the volume or number of cylinders that can be carried.
2.5.9 Nitrogen / CO2:There is no specific limit on the volume or number of cylinders that can be carried. Tyres inflated by Nitrogen/CO2 are accepted for Carriage in the same way as any normally inflated tyre.
2.5.10 Non-flammable/non-toxic gases for leisure, domestic or personal purposes. Gases used for scuba diving (compressed air/argon), for inflating balloons (helium), for welding (carbon dioxide/CO2) or any other non-flammable/non-toxic gas, for example, nitrogen, may be accepted for Carriage. There is no specific limit on the volume or number of cylinders that can be carried.
2.5.11 Fire Extinguishers: There is no specific limit on the volume or number of fire extinguishers that can be carried.
2.5.12 Fuel:The maximum permissible quantity of liquid fuel (petrol, diesel or biofuel) that can be carried in portable reserve fuel containers on board a passenger Shuttle per Vehicle, is as follows:
- Plastic containers: 3 x 10 litres
- Metal containers: 1 x 20 litres
- The total maximum amount is 30 litres.
A combination of containers may be used so long as each container size does not exceed the maximum allowed for that type and the total does not exceed 30 litres.
2.5.13 The Carriage of:
a) fuel in any greater quantity than that specified in 2.5.12 above; or
b) empty containers that have previously contained fuel and have not been cleaned must be declared as Dangerous Goods to Eurotunnel and carried on freight Shuttles.
HAZARDOUS ARTICLES
“Hazardous Articles” means any items which by their nature or the method by which they are transported are, in Eurotunnel’s sole opinion, liable to present a threat or hazard to the safety or security of Shuttle operations. Hazardous Articles include but are not limited to fireworks, firearms, explosives and weapons of any kind.
3.1 The Carriage of Hazardous Articles is subject to prohibitions and restrictions.
3.1.1 Fireworks: The Carriage of fireworks, flares and pyrotechnics is PROHIBITED
3.1.2 Firearms: the Carriage of Firearms is RESTRICTED. Firearms (including sporting weapons) are not permitted for Carriage unless accompanied by a valid firearms or shotgun certificate(s) corresponding to the weapon(s) carried.Firearms must be declared to Eurotunnel staff at check-in, and/or as otherwise directed.
Before Carriage, Firearms must be disabled by removing the bolt, magazine or other vital operating part. Such parts must be kept separate from the firearms and concealed from view. Firearms and parts must be stored securely at all times.
3.1.3 Ammunition: The Carriage of ammunition is RESTRICTED. The quantity of ammunition carried must be kept to a minimum. Ammunition must be stored securely and separately from any firearm and concealed from view.
3.1.4 Explosives: The Carriage of explosives is PROHIBITED.
3.1.5 Weapons: The Carriage of weapons of any kind is RESTRICTED.
3.2 Any Vehicle carrying Firearms, ammunition, explosives or weapons must be presented for a security check in accordance with the Channel Tunnel Security Order 1994. Eurotunnel reserves the right to refuse Carriage to any Vehicle that may in Eurotunnel’s sole opinion, present a risk to the health, safety or security of other passengers, staff or Shuttle operations.

Liability and Indemnity
4.1 The Customer is liable for any damage or injury caused by the Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Goods or Hazardous Articles other than as a result of Eurotunnel’s negligence.
4.2 Eurotunnel accepts Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Goods and Hazardous Articles for Carriage subject to:
4.2.1 Compliance by the Customer with all Regulations and any other directions given by Eurotunnel relating to their Carriage; and
4.2.2 A full indemnity from the Customer against any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage incurred by Eurotunnel or any third party resulting from the Carriage of such goods.
4.3 Any Personal Belongings that may, in Eurotunnel’s sole discretion, be categorised as Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Goods or Hazardous Articles shall only be accepted for Carriage in accordance with this policy and Eurotunnel’s Conditions of Carriage.
4.4 Eurotunnel shall have no obligation to accept any Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Goods or Hazardous Articles for Carriage.
4.5 The Customer must ensure that any Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Goods or Hazardous Articles are safe for Carriage being safely packaged, labelled and stowed as specified by any regulatory body or Eurotunnel as directed by this policy or the Conditions of Carriage.
