Safety instructions

General safety and security

  • Please ensure that you are carrying only genuine passengers. Check to ensure that no stowaway passengers have concealed themselves onto your coach. Please also ensure that there is no unaccompanied baggage on the vehicle. Each piece of luggage must belong to a passenger who is actually travelling on your coach.
  • For reasons of safety, only small quantities (up to 20 litres max) of containerised fuel can be carried and this can be carried only in purpose designed containers. The actual amount depends on whether approved metal or plastic containers are being used. Please check with LeShuttle staff for further details. You should also ensure that the fuel tanks on the coach have not been overfilled. This is to avoid a spillage if heat causes the fuel to expand.
  • If your coach is stationary in the allocation area with the doors open please warn your passengers, especially children, about the dangers of moving traffic in adjacent lanes.

Before boarding the shuttle

  • Switch off your headlights
  • Lower or secure your radio aerial

During boarding

  • Follow the instructions of the boarding staff or train crew.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front by ensuring that only one coach is in a carriage at any given time. Do not stop your coach between carriages.
  • Respect the speed limit of 10 km/h when on board the shuttle.

Parking on board

Note: a car can be parked at the front and/or rear of your coach inside the carriage.

  • Apply your parking brake and engage first gear or park. A member of staff will place chocks against the wheels to aid immobilisation.
  • Open all doors, windows, air vents and skylights. This will allow all announcements to be heard and the automatic fire extinguishing system will be effective in case of fire on board your coach.
  • Switch off your engine.
  • When opening the coach door, beware of anyone who may be walking alongside the vehicle.
  • Passengers must remain on board the coach until all the shuttle carriage doors are closed.
  • Stay close to your vehicle in order that staff on board can contact you if necessary.
  • Do not use any independent system that may restart your motor (as this can activate our fire suppression system). This includes the heating and cooling system plus the on-board video system.
  • Listen carefully to the safety announcements broadcast over the public address system and encourage your passengers to do likewise.
  • Inform staff on board if any of your passengers will require wheelchairs in the event of an evacuation.

Passenger safety on-board the shuttle

Remind your passengers:

  • Smoking and flash photography are strictly forbidden on board as these can interfere with our fire detection system. If activated, the emergency procedure could lead to evacuation of the shuttle.
  • Passengers should not stand or walk between vehicles or between vehicles and the doors at either end of the carriages during the crossing.
  • Passengers must not tamper with the on-board safety equipment, such as wheel chocks and fire extinguishers.
  • Passengers must follow instructions given on the public address as well as those shown on the visual display screens in your carriage or given by the staff on board.
  • Note the number of your carriage shown on the visual display screens.
  • On arrival at the terminal, passengers must return to the coach.

In the event of an emergency

If an incident occurs in your carriage:

  • An alarm will sound
  • Evacuate all passengers from your coach.
  • Follow instructions of staff on board. Illuminated arrows will direct your passengers either:
    • Towards the adjacent carriages, or
    • Towards the service tunnel in order to board another shuttle.
  • If necessary, ask staff on board for wheelchairs to be provided.

On arrival

  • Please do not remove and stow the wheel chocks. This will be done by a member of staff.
  • Close all windows and vents.
  • Ensure that all passengers are present and seated on the coach before driving off the shuttle.
  • Do not start your engine until advised.

Driving off the shuttle and departing

  • Respect the speed limit of 10 km/h inside the shuttle.
  • Follow appropriate signs.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front by ensuring that only one coach is in a carriage at any given time. Do not stop your coach between carriages.
  • Remind your passengers to fasten their seat belts. This is a legal requirement in France.
  • On arrival at the Folkestone Terminal, coach drivers must not set down passengers at the Total Service Station. There is no pedestrian exit from this site nor is there any vehicular access for such passengers to be collected by taxi, private car or public transport.
