Tips for cycling in Europe

Even the most experience cyclists might need to brush up on the rules from time to time. From what to pack to staying safe, be sure to read up on all the guidance you can so your holiday is safe and fun.

Cycle helmets

Helmets may not always be a legal requirement but are always a good idea. They’re not uncomfortable and can help keep you safe should an accident occur. In some places they are mandatory, with fines in place for non-compliance, so be sure to check the rules before you travel.

Road rules for cyclists

The rules may be slightly different between countries, but it’s always safest to wear a helmet and make yourself as visible as possible to other road users, especially at night. There can be fines if you don’t comply to the rules, and for most places, cycle lanes must be used where you find them on your journey. This guide from cyclingweekly will help you with the rules for cyclists across Europe.

What you need to take

When packing, try to choose clothing that is designed to make cycling more comfortable, especially if you are planning to try some longer routes. Think about the weather and temperature, check online if you’re not sure.
